As the rest of the world's art museums are facing unprecedented crisis' on many levels, Shanghai will be home to three new art museums by the end of this year. This is in addition to several museums that have already opened in recent years. In response to this sudden activity we are holding a series of informal discussions with art museum owners, directors and professionals as a way to profile these new spaces as well as examine the roles that these museums play in the cultural landscape of this great city.
As many of these institutions are devoted entirely to contemporary art how will each position itself against the other? What obstacles and benefits do private and pubic museum share in common or differ on? Is there room for collaboration, cooperation or is it strictly competition? Is there an audience to sustain all of these museums? Who are they? Does a museum need a collection? What are the challenges for a museum to collect art by living artists, untested by history? How do these institutions balance a collection with their programming? What are the models of fiscal sustainability? Will these hulking edifices just become empty shells? How do these spaces break down traditional notions of 'museum' to meet the demands of the 21st Century?
