Reading Room celebrates the launch of The Book about Xu Bing’s Book from the Ground, edited by MABSOCIETY and published by MIT Press / Mass MoCA (English) and Guangxi Normal University Press (Chinese). This publication, along with Xu Bing’s From Point to Point is presented together with related artworks and archival material by one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists.
Book from the Ground is an extensive, seven-year, and ongoing, project that explores the possibilities of universal communication through the language of icons. Xu Bing’s Book from the Ground project has manifest itself in collages, videos, computer programs, and large-scale installation works. In 2010 Xu Bing, using only found logos, emoticons, and ideograms from around the world, wrote From Point to Point, a 112-page novel describing the day in the life of a white collar, urbanite. The Book about Xu Bing’s Book from the Ground is a reader’s guide to this novel and the project that gave rise to it. It presents archival material, interviews, texts, and translation of From Point to Point alongside insights from semioticians, art critics, and the artist himself about this breakthrough project.
“阅览室”旨在庆祝《徐冰的地书之书》的发布，该书由MABSOCIETY编写，麻省理工大学出版社／马瑟诸塞州现代艺术博物馆（英文版）与广西师范大学出版社（中文版）联合发行。现场展出的不仅包括该出版物及徐冰的《从点到点》，同时呈现由这位享有国际盛誉的当代艺术家的相关艺术作品及档案资料。
“地书”是一项长达七年并仍在进行中的繁杂工程，致力于借由图标语言以探索实现全世界无障碍交流的可能性。徐冰的“地书”项目以拼贴，影像，电脑软件及大规模装置作品等形式呈现。徐冰于2010年完成《从点到点》——这是一部112页的小说，由全世界范围搜集得来的名牌标识、图标和符号写就，描绘的是一位都市白领一天的生活。《徐冰的地书之书》旨在指导读者阅读该小说以理解整个项目。现场呈现的是与该项目相关的档案资料、采访笔录、文献和《从点到点》的翻译，以及语言学家、艺术评论者和艺术家本人关于该突破性项目的解读。
